RIVETED REVIEW, EXCERPT & GIVEAWAY

RIVETED - header banner

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes the next installment in the Saints of Denver series.

    Riveted - cover

Everyone else in Dixie Carmichael’s life has made falling in love look easy, and now she is ready for her own chance at some of that happily ever after. Which means she’s done pining for the moody, silent former soldier who works with her at the bar that’s become her home away from home. Nope. No more chasing the hot as heck thundercloud of a man and no more waiting for Mr. Right to find her; she’s going hunting for him...even if she knows her heart is stuck on its stupid infatuation with Dash Churchill.

Denver has always been just a pit stop for Church on his way back to rural Mississippi. It was supposed to be simple, uneventful, but nothing could have prepared him for the bubbly, bouncy redhead with doe eyes and endless curves. Now he knows it’s time to get out of Denver, fast. For a man used to living in the shadows, the idea of spending his days in the sun is nothing short of terrifying. When Dixie and Church find themselves caught up in a homecoming overshadowed with lies and danger, Dixie realizes that while falling in love is easy, loving takes a whole lot more work…especially when Mr. Right thinks he’s all wrong for you.

 Gabrielle's 4 **** Review:
Ever Since Dixie laid eyes on Church, she knew she was meant to be with him but Church didn't think the same... Or so she thinks.
Church is afraid to love someone. So, when Dixie shows up in his life, he closes himself off to her immediately. But when someone who is like his grandmother gets hurt, his "father" asks for him to come home because she's asking for him.
Originally, he told his family that he couldn't come home because there was a girl in Denver that he couldn't leave because he loved her... So when he finally agrees to come, they tell him to bring his "girl" except in honesty there isn't a girl. That drives him to ask Dixie to join him because if there was one girl in Denver keeping him there, it was the bright sunshine that was Dixie.
They drive his motorcycle all the way to his home state but along the way, strange things happen and they follow him home.  They had to figure out why those things were happening before someone really got hurt or killed.

I enjoyed Dixie's character a lot. Even though life beat her down, she kept getting back up and always with a smile on her face. Her whiny inner dialogue was a little annoying when she was upset that she hadn't found "the one" yet but she's only twenty six so she still had some time to find the right guy. Other than that, her spirits were always up and she wanted to help people who were down. She even allowed her sister's ex fiance (I CAN'T WAIT FOR THAT BOOK) to stay at her place until he figured out what to do next.
Church had some serious issues. Yes -- I don't want two perfect people to find each other and have a perfect happy life because that is boring. Church had a lot of demons that haunted him (I don't want to say what they are because they're spoilers!) He wanted Dixie's sunshine but he didn't want to take the light out of her eyes when he'd "eventually break her heart".
I love love love Church's "fill in father". He was an interesting character because he loved Church even after they lost his mother. A lot of men would kick their step child to the curb but he just loved him as his own.
Dixie and Church compliment each other, rounding their relationship out. This is a fantastic addition to the Saints of Denver series and I can't wait to read the next book! I recommend this to anyone who of course loves Jay's other books or just anyone who loves a good romantic story with a splash of suspense!

EXCERPT:

Church

She kissed me.

Her lips touched mine and she destroyed me. This tiny ray of light that seemed determined to chase the darkness inside of me away unraveled me with nothing more than the brush of her very soft lips against mine.

I should’ve pulled away, either that or gone all in. The attraction between us was only going to end one way, with me inside of her as we scorched through one another, so a real kiss with tongues and teeth and grabbing hands was inevitable, especially if she was holding the door wide open in invitation. I was already struggling with the friend thing and this wasn’t helping at all. I stood there, holding her, feeling her as she rubbed her mouth over mine, the barest hint of pressure as she took a taste, as she feathered her lips against mine like she was trying to memorize the shape, the feel, the flavor of them. It was the singularly softest touch I’d ever experienced and yet it had the power to make my knees weak and my blood pop with a desire so sharp it felt like it could pierce right through my skin.

Her hand cradled my jaw, her fingers shaking with some of the same things I was feeling. This thing that lived between us was hungry and tired of being ignored. It buzzed around us, electric and hot, refusing to be cooled by the chill in the night air that surrounded us. If we weren’t careful the passion that was hungry and needy between us would consume us, devour us, and leave us nothing more than hollow husks filled with fading satisfaction and jagged disenchantment because no matter how good we were together it couldn’t and wouldn’t last. I didn’t want any part of me to be responsible for burning her out. I liked that her light chased my shadows away and that meant I wasn’t going to have any kind of hand in dimming her internal glow.

Her breasts pressed into the center of my chest as she leaned more fully into me and I could feel the pointed peaks of her nipples stab into my skin. The sensation made my dick twitch behind my zipper and had all the available blood that was still above my belt rushing south. I’d always liked the way Dixie was built. She was on the shorter side, but every single part of her small frame was curved and lush. She looked like a woman that you could grab ahold of without having to watch yourself. She was delicate but in no way did she come across as fragile or breakable. She looked like she could take everything I had to give her, all the pent-up longing, all the nights of frustration I spent hard and alone, all the denied hunger that made me want to eat her up and then go back for seconds and thirds because I knew there was no way I was going to have my fill of her honeyed lips and velvety skin in one go.

There was so much of her to experience, and I wanted to know what all of it felt like, tasted like, sounded like. I wanted to watch her come from every possible position I could get her in, and then I wanted to find some new ones, ones no man had ever had her in before, and watch her come in those, too. Because I knew once I got her she would let me have her in ways she hadn’t let anyone else. Her eyes, so pretty and dark, made me all kids of promises, and I wanted to take her up on every single one of them. But there wasn’t anything I could promise in return, and that always kept me from crossing the invisible line.

She ran the tip of her nose along the edge of my jaw and that little nuzzle made my entire body shudder. She had the ability to bring down all the walls I’d so carefully built up around us in order to keep both of us safe. She didn’t have any clue the kind of damage I could do if I ignored all the warning bells ringing loudly in the back of my mind. I knew the ways in which I could wreck the women in my life that I cared about and there was no way on God’s green and often unforgiving Earth that I would subject her to that. I barely survived the loss of the last woman I loved. I knew if I let Dixie sneak her way inside my heart and something happened to her there would be nothing left of me. There wouldn’t be anyplace left for me to run.

Gabrielle's 4 **** review:

I received an ARC in an exchange of an honest review.
Amber Tate's world fell apart at the end of Unknown (book 1). All she had left in the world was her brother, her best friend, and her brother's best friend (who she's been in love with for years). After a struggle, their crew, and a bunch of random army guys they bumped into all head toward an army base that they believe is still running even though an unknown enemy wiped out most people.
Once at the base, they are brought in and life almost seemed to go back to normal but everyone in their group grew emotionally unstable. Tater (Amber's brother) is moody and depressed, Remy (her best friend) is trying to change her ways and doesn't want to get close to anyone but Amber, and Rylen is dealing with guilt and regret.
After what seemed like forever, Amber admits her feelings to Rylen and I wanted to smack her and say, "You should have told him forever ago!" But when everyone starts to feel too comfortable, their world is turned upside down.
Going into this, I was a little unsure because I wasn't too much of a fan of Unknown. But this book kept my rapt attention and I never wanted to put it down. I read it only in a few hours, never looking up from my screen.
There was explosive romance, solid and loving friendships, and a sibling bond that made my heart smile. The relationships (even non romantic) were amazing. Rarely have I seen some this great.
My heart ached the entire book but it was well worth it. I can't wait to find out what happens next. At the end of the book (I'm not saying what happens), I was like, OMG OMG OMG OMG NO!!!!! I NEED THE THIRD BOOK ASAP!
Great job, Wendy! Thank you for bringing Amber, Rylen, Remy, and Tater to life! If you like dystopian/apocalyptic with an explosive romance then this book is for you!

Exclusive Excerpt:

Remy put her head on my shoulder and I got a small but distinct whiff of chocolate.
“I might have to lick you, Rem,” I blurted.
Both Tater and Rylen turned to us, nearly cracking heads in the process.
“She smells like chocolate,” I explained. Tater shook his head and faced forward again. Ry gave me one last bemused look before turning back too.
“Hey,” Remy whispered. She raised her free hand to my face, and to my shock, there was half of the tiny candy pinched between her finger and thumb. “I saved half for you.”
My heart lurched with emotion. “Are you serious?” She nodded and her chin quivered as she raised the M&M to my mouth and fed it to me. She licked her fingers off while I savored the tiny morsel. My eyes watered as I crunched down and Remy said, “Good, right?”
A second later we were hugging and crying all over again. “We have to save our water,” I choked.         She sniffled and let go of me to wipe her face. “No more crying.”

Title: A Thousand Letters

Author: Staci Hart

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Full Cover

About A Thousand Letters:

Sometimes your life is split by a single decision.

I’ve spent every day of the last seven years regretting mine: he left, and I didn’t follow. A thousand letters went unanswered, my words like petals in the wind, spinning away into nothing, taking me with them.

But now he’s back.

I barely recognize the man he’s become, but I can still see a glimmer of the boy who asked me to be his forever, the boy I walked away from when I was young and afraid.

Maybe if he’d come home under better circumstances, he could speak to me without anger in his voice. Maybe if I’d said yes all those years ago, he’d look at me without the weight of rejection in his eyes. Maybe if things were different, we would have had a chance.

One regretted decision sent him away. One painful journey bought him back to me. I only wish I could keep him.

About Staci Hart:

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life: a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, even though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f and ends with k.

From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's sleeping, cleaning, or designing graphics.

Rise of Fire Review

RISE OF FIRE (REIGN OF SHADOWS #2)
BY SOPHIE JORDAN
YA FANTASY

GOODREADS SUMMARY:
The richly suspenseful sequel to Sophie Jordan’s romantic fantasy Reign of Shadows.

Luna and Fowler have escaped the kingdom of Relhok, but they haven’t escaped the darkness. When a battle against the dark dwellers mortally injures Fowler, Luna is faced with a choice: put their fate in the hands of mysterious strangers or risk losing Fowler forever.

Desperate to keep the one bright part of her life alive, Luna accepts the help of soldiers from a nearby kingdom. Lagonia’s castle offers reprieve from the dangerous outside world—until the king discovers both Fowler's and Luna’s true ties to Relhok and their influence over the throne.

Now pawns in each kingdom’s political game, Luna and Fowler are more determined than ever to escape and build the life they’ve been dreaming of. But their own pasts have a tight hold on their hearts and their destinies. Luna must embrace the darkness and fire within her before she loses not only Fowler, but the power she was destined to inherit.

GABRIELLE'S 4 **** REVIEW:
This book picks up where Reign of Shadows left off. The last book (spoilers) ended with Luna jumping in a hole (where the dwellers live) after Fowler who sacrificed himself to save her. She finds him pretty quickly and they escape but that doesn't mean they're safe. Fowler is poisoned by the dwellers "toxin" which slowly, and utterly painfully, kills the victim. But soldiers from the bordering country find them and bring them to their king because one of them instantly recognizes Fowler for who he truly is.
Once at the palace, the king instantly recognizes Luna because she looks exactly like her mother (who the king courted before she chose Luna's father). Fowler meets his betrothed (since birth) and Luna gets engaged to Chasan (King Tebald's son). Luna and Fowler have to hide their feelings for each other in order to pretend they are content where they are when really all they want is to escape.

For the new characters, I liked Chasan the best. He kind of fell "insta in love" with Luna which was a little strange but whenever he was in a scene, I was like, I WANT MORE CHASAN! His sister was really annoying but their personalities were so different that it brought a whole new dynamic to the story.
It kind of upset me that both Luna and Fowler got forced into engagements (which is a common thing in fantasy books when you're a royal) but I liked their unwavering love to each other. Even though Luna tries to force herself to move on from Fowler (because of what she found out in the last book) she just can't because what they have is something more than a crush.
I really like the darkness of the world. How being outside is really dangerous. Every moment they have to be out there, there's ton of action and keeps my heart pumping in anticipation. I love how Luna learned how to adapt so she could still shoot things with a bow and arrows (even though she's blind.)
I wasn't a fan that there wasn't much description (even in Fowler's point of view). I understand why there isn't in Luna's because she's blind but Fowler CAN see and I wanted to see more of the world, palace, tunnels, everything. The only other thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the rushed ending. Yes, it was nice and satisfying to have a "happy" ending, but when I was like 90% of the way through the book, I was like, no way this can end so quickly. This duology should have either been a standalone or a trilogy because she could have shrunk it into one book or stretched it out into three.
Overall, I gave Rise of Fire 4 stars because the good outweighed the negative. I always enjoy Sophie's books and can't wait to read more from her!

Riveted Excerpt: Chapter 1

RIVETED - header banner

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes the next installment in the Saints of Denver series.

Chapter 1 excerpt:
I shifted my weight on my feet and bit back a sigh. I should have known she was going to be persistent, but I was done playing nice for her when it was clear her son was so beaten down that he was too scared to make a move or even speak for himself. She was a tyrant and I wasn’t going to subject myself to her vile company anymore. As soon as I slipped inside my apartment I was going to delete all the dating apps I had on my phone.

“I have a dog and she’s leery around strangers.” That was partly true. I did have a dog, a massive blue pit bull that I rescued from a shelter just days before she was supposed to be put down. Dolly looked like a brute, but she was a sweetheart and had never met a human she didn’t want tummy scratches and love from. We were kind of kindred spirits in that way. I mean I didn’t need my ears scratched or my belly rubbed, but I was afflicted with the same pressing need to be liked and accepted by pretty much everyone I came in contact with. It was ingrained in me to at least try to make everyone a friend, and if they didn’t reciprocate my kindness it only forced me to try harder. Sometimes I hated that about myself, and sometimes it was my favorite personality trait because the men and women in my life weren’t the easiest nuts to crack. They all loved me and let me in because I’d refused to let them shut me out.

Well, all except for one man.

I couldn’t hold back my flinch when he crossed my mind because he had warned me about online dating from the get-go, and I hated that he was right about it. I also hated that he was the reason I was desperate to find a man . . . a man who wasn’t him . . . in the first place.

Mommie Dearest shook her head and clicked her tongue at me. “Joseph is allergic to dogs. Your pet will have to go as things progress between the two of you.”

I felt my eyes pop wide and the forced smile I had plastered on my face for the entire evening finally slipped away. I already knew she had a few screws loose, but she was taking her crazy to another level if she thought she could tell me to get rid of my dog or what to do with anything in my life.

I straightened my shoulders and tilted my chin up. It was a look that worked on the drunks and unruly college kids that I hustled out of the bar where I worked every night.

“That’s not going to be a problem because things are not progressing beyond my front door. Thank you both for dinner, but if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go inside and cuddle my dog and erase every online dating app there is.”

The woman narrowed her eyes and stepped around her son. The young man made a noise low in his throat and his eyes widened. I thought he was scared of his mom, but the closer I looked at him the more obvious it became that he was scared for me as the woman advanced. He reached out a hand to grab his mother’s elbow, but it fell away before making contact like he knew the repercussions for intervening would be severe and drastic.

“Listen here, you little . . .” I lifted my hand before she could throw at me whatever insulting word she was going to label me with. I don’t think the woman was used to anyone standing their ground with her because she gasped and fell back a step.

“Stop. I thought I was talking to Joseph. I thought he was a nice guy, maybe a little sheltered and awkward . . . but a nice guy. Obviously it wasn’t him running his dating profile and there was some other agenda here from the start. I’m well past the age where I need a mother’s approval or permission to date her son, so I’m going to go into my apartment and end this date before either side gets nasty.” I looked at the shell-shocked young man hovering behind his mother and mouthed good luck before turning my back on both of them and inserting my key into the door. Dolly barked loud and deep from the other side, which was both comforting and reassuring.

I turned the knob on the door and pushed into the apartment without looking back. Once the door was shut and my dog was happily rubbing against my legs, I tossed my head back and let out a sigh that felt like it was tied to my soul. I was tired, so tired.

  HometownCowboy_Richardson

About HOMETOWN COWBOY:

NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH A COWBOY

Jessa Mae Love is done with relationships. No matter how tempting he might be, she cannot--will not--fall for a man like Lance Cortez. The outrageously handsome cowboy is practically a living legend in Colorado, as famous for riding bulls as he is for breaking hearts. What would a big-time rodeo star like him see in a small-town veterinarian who wears glasses, rescues animals, and cries when watching rom-coms? Turns out, plenty.

Raising bulls, riding the circuit, and looking after his ailing father--Lance never stands still for long. Yet Jessa catches his attention, and the more she tries to resist him, the more he wants her. When she agrees to move to the ranch to keep an eye on Lance's dad, Jessa tells him they have to keep it professional: no flirting, no sweet talk, and definitely no kissing. But with Jessa now living under his roof, that's easier said than done . . .

Hometown Cowboy - Excerpt

Her eyes fell shut and blocked out everything except for the feel of his mouth, the curve of it, the wet warmth, the way his lips melted into hers. They were firm, but tender, too, so skilled and wonderful it broke open her chest.

Heat flowed in until she was dizzy with it, drowning in it, but just as she lost the power to stand on her own, Lances hands moved to her hips and hitched her closer to his body. She let herself lean into him, sliding her hands up his ripped chest, lightly sweeping her fingers over the bandage. God, he was perfection.

His lips moved to her ear, while his fingers carefully brushed her hair out of the way. “I think youre right,” he breathed. “My life might never be the same.” His tongue traced the ridge of her ear while his heavy breaths grazed her neck and made her legs falter.

He mustve felt her wobble, because he wrapped his arms around her and crushed her body against his. “Damn, Jessa…” He kissed his way down her neck. “You smell good.

“Vanilla sugar shower gel,” she gasped, letting her head tilt to the side.

“Mmmm. I like it.” He slid his tongue back up her neck and his lips found hers again. This time he kissed her harder, like he wanted more.

Yes. More. There could be so much more…

Lance shifted, guiding her until her back was against the refrigerator. Things were falling, magnets and papers, but none of that mattered because Lance was pressed against her, his tongue stroking hers, his hips grinding against her body. The feel of him hard and desperate against her sent her heart spiraling. A frantic moan escaped, and Lance smiled against her lips. She let her head fall back so she could draw in a breath, but she hit the refrigerator.

A loud crash froze her. Lance pulled away. Those bottles of Jack Daniels that had been on top of the fridge now lay next to their feet.

“At least they didnt break.” Lance started to laugh but she pressed her hand against his mouth. “Its not funny! What if your dad—”

“What in gods name is that racket?” came from down the hall.

“Oh no,” she hissed. “Oh god…”

Lance still had a big silly grin on his face. “Its nothing, Dad,” he called, but the man came charging around the corner anyway.

Jessa pushed back and pretended to inspect the bandage. “Well, there we go. Everything looks good.” She glanced up and forced a smile, but shed like to bet he could see the vein in her forehead pulsing. “Hey, Luis. Sorry about the noise. I was bandaging Lance up and we accidentally knocked over the bottles.” Her bright red face had to be a dead giveaway that the whole sentence was a lie. Not to mention her dilated eyes.

“Uh. Thanks, Jessa,” Lance said, reaching past her for his shirt.

No problem, she intoned, as if answering a complete stranger. “Next time, dont wait so long to get it cleaned up.”

A spark smiled in his eyes. “I definitely wont.”

Whew. She fought the compulsion to fan her face with a towel.

“Guess I should get going then.” Lance clapped his dads shoulder on his way out the door. “Night Pops.”

Luis didnt respond. He simply watched his son leave, then he turned to Jessa. “So nothings going on between you two.”

She invoked her laser focus to put away the first aid supplies. “Uh-huh. Nope. Nothing.”

“From what I could tell that was a whole lot of nothing,” Luis muttered as he plodded back down the hall.

That was one way to put it. A whole lot of nothing.

Exclusive Excerpt:

A golden hue of sunrise turned night into dawn. I sat on a small boulder, staring at the sliver of sun through trees of the Nevada parkland, the same spot where I’d been sitting silently in the dark for two hours in the cold. I couldn’t take Remy’s whimpering and soul-crushing cries each time she fell back asleep in the tent, venturing into nightmares of what she’d seen the night before. What we’d all seen. I might never sleep again.
            Mom. Dad. Abuela.
I fought back another wave of debilitating grief that made my bones feel like liquid—like I’d never have the ability to stand again. Have to be strong. Have to be strong. I rocked back and forth with my eyes shut tight. I couldn’t afford to give in to the loss. If I did, it would consume me whole and devour my will to live. I took a deep breath in and let it out slowly.
We’d been fired up to leave the nature preserve last night and head north to the base in Utah after hearing the Morse code message, supposedly from other military personnel in hiding, like us. But we decided to wait until morning since we needed more light to plan our trip on the map. Plus, headlights in the night would be too easy to spot, and we were all worthless last night, running on adrenaline and vengeance, one step away from crashing. I never did crash or sleep a wink, even though my adrenaline was long gone.
The soft sunrise was too pretty—too majestic—for the way I felt inside. Raw. Like my heart had been grated. During the night, I’d begun to believe the sun would never rise again, and now that it was I felt as if the Earth were mocking what we’d been through, reminding me just how miniscule and unremarkable we were. A new day was happening despite what we’d lost. The world wasn’t stopping to mourn. It felt wrong.
We’d been so close to the camp yesterday where the Disaster Relief Initiative, the DRI personnel, had taken my parents, my grandmother, Remy’s parents, and Rylen’s wife Livia. We watched in confusion as those DRI bastards fled. Then we’d watched in disbelief as Air Force jets dropped a bomb on that camp, obliterating our family and the people from our town. Oh, God.
I pressed the back of my hand to my mouth and squeezed my eyes shut. Even while the world fell apart around us, I never imagined anything would happen to my parents. I never let myself believe it was possible, even after watching my Grandpa Tate shot and killed by a Disaster Relief Personnel—fucking Derps. Who was I without my parents? I was the daughter of an Army man and a Mexican dancer. A Green Machine and a SeƱorita. A small bubble of laughter worked its way through a sob in my throat when I thought about my parents’ silly banter with each other. Their relentless love and devotion to me and my older brother, Tater.
The sound of a tent’s zipper wrenched through the morning solitude and I quickly wiped my eyes. I looked over and saw Rylen crouching as he pushed through the opening. The golden hue of sun made his blond hair and the scruff on his face stand out. His eyes met mine and I had to swallow hard at the sight of pain in his expression. I’d already cried so much last night.

Seeing those solemn gray eyes brought back a flood of memories: young, scrawny Rylen Fite, loved and cared for by my parents like he was their own son. And his eyes reflected his remembrance too, as if he felt their absence as prominently as I did. But he’d lost a wife, as well. Maybe she hadn’t been his wife in every technical sense of the word, but he’d been trying to make it right. Every bit of his loss was reflected in the heavy way he sat on the rock beside me and rubbed his face before staring out at the sunrise.
