Better When He's Bold Review

Better When He's Bold (Welcome to the Point #2)
By Jay Crownover
NA Contemporary

Goodreads Summary:

Some men are just better when they're bold.

Welcome to the Point...

In a dark and broken kingdom, a ruler has to be fearless to control the streets and the ruthless people who run them.

Race Hartman is just bold enough, just smart enough, and just lost enough to wear the crown. Places like the Point will always have bad things and bad people, but the man in control of all that badness can minimize the devastation. Race has a plan, but can he prevent total annihilation without destroying himself?

Brysen Carter has always seen her best friend's brother for what he is--too pretty, too smooth, and way too dangerous to touch. Basking in Race's golden glow is very tempting, but Brysen knows she'd eventually get burned.

When she starts receiving threatening texts and someone tries to take her out in parking lot, the only person interested in keeping her safe is the one man she can't allow herself to have.

Sometimes being bold is the only way to stay alive. But can she let Race save her life . . . if it means losing herself to him?

Gabrielle's 4 Star Review:

Race Hartmen comes from a royally rich family but he threw everything away when he found out he had a half sister that his father tried to kill in the first book of the series. He now lives in the center of the criminal kingdom as its king.
Brysen Carter's family is from the same town as Race's but they don't live on "top of the hill" where all the super rich people live. They aren't poor but they aren't as wealthy as the Hartmen's. Their family is at the end of their money, about to lose their home and livelihoods because her father isn't smart with their money.
Brysen tries to avoid Race at all costs. She is fiercely attracted to the super smart, hot, rich guy BUT she tries to hide it. She knows it would be stupid to start anything with the new king of the criminal world in the Point.
Their attraction is undeniable when they first bump into each other in the book and as time goes on, Brysen slowly stops trying to fight it. Race is set out to protect her while her world is falling apart all around her. Someone is bent on revenge and tries to kill her and ruin her life. Her mother won't stop drinking long enough to be a real mother. Her father buries himself in his office as he loses his money in gambling casinos.
Finally, the only solace Brysen finds is in Race's arms and they realize the attraction between them is more than just lust. Something that could maybe even hold them together when everything tries to tear them apart.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance and some nonstop action. Jay proves herself once again in this second installment in the Welcome to the Point series!!

Better When He's Bad Review

BETTER WHEN HE'S BAD (A Welcome To The Point Novel)

BY JAY CROWNOVER

   NA CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

I'm ecstatic to start of the month of August with such a gripping and steamy book.

SUMMARY:
Welcome to the Point . . .
There's a difference between a bad boy and a boy who's bad. . . . Meet Shane Baxter.
Sexy, dark, and dangerous, Bax isn't just from the wrong side of the tracks, he is the wrong side of the tracks. A criminal, a thug, and a brawler, he was the master of bad choices, until one such choice landed him in prison for five years. Now Bax is out and looking for answers, and he doesn't care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get them. But there's a new player in the game, and she's much too innocent, much too soft . . . and standing directly in his way.
Dovie Pryce knows all about living a hard life and the tough choices that come with it. She's always tried to be good, tried to help others, and tried not to let the darkness pull her down. But the streets are fighting back, things have gone from bad to worse, and the only person who can help her is the scariest, sexiest, most complicated ex-con the Point has ever produced.
Bax terrifies her, awakening feelings she never thought she'd have for a guy like him. But it doesn't take Dovie long to realize . . . some boys are just better when they're bad.

    GABRIELLE'S 5 STAR REVIEW:
Shane Baxter, aka Bax, was sent to prison when he was eighteen years old because he was set up. Did he deserve to go to prison? Yes. He was a criminal. If you don't believe me then look at this:

“My name is Shane Baxter, Bax to most people, and I’m a thief. Got a girl? I’ll take her from you. Got a sweet ride you dropped a mint on? I’ll take it from you… Taking things that didn’t belong to me was second nature; well, that and finding all the worst kinds of trouble to get into.”

Dovie Pryce is a girl who grew up in a bad neighborhood with a father who wants her dead and a user mother, but somehow was able to keep her kindness and innocence through it all.

I'll start off by saying that I am never one to jump on the bandwagon for a "bad boy". I usually find the books unrealistic that the female (who is usually a goodie goodie) gets him to fall under her spell with no effort whatsoever. It. Doesn't. Happen. BUT Jay Crownover found a way to win me over. Bax was bad, even throughout the whole book, and Dovie finds a way to not only fall in love with him but to fall in love with even his bad parts. He doesn't change for her but he does reign in his impulsive urges for her.
Through the whole book danger lurked right around the corner. And you find out new surprising details that are truly a surprise. I wasn't like, Yeah, I figured that out on page 1, like I do with a lot of books.
This is a great start to the Welcome to the Point series. It had the right mixture of loyalty, danger, action, and hot steamy action! I can't wait to find out what happens next with Race's story.

DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS EPIC SERIES!

Hell Breaks Loose Review & Giveaway

HELL BREAKS LOOSE
BY SOPHIE JORDAN
CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

SUMMARY:
Hell hath no hunger like a man let out of a cage . . .
Shy and awkward, First Daughter Grace Reeves has always done what she’s told. Tired of taking orders, she escapes her security detail for a rare moment of peace. Except her worst nightmare comes to life when a ruthless gang of criminals abducts her. Her only choice is to place her trust in Reid Allister, an escaped convict whose piercing gaze awakens something deep inside her. Reid is nothing like her other captors.
He’s tougher, smarter…and one blistering look from him makes her hotter than any man ever has.
Reid spent years plotting escape and revenge . . .years without a woman in his bed. For this hardened felon, Grace Reeves isn’t just out of his league—she’s from another planet, but that doesn’t stop him from wanting her. Escaping Devil’s Rock was tough, but resisting this woman could be the end of him. For a man with nothing to lose, protecting her . . . claiming her as his own, becomes more necessary than his next breath.

Gabrielle's 5 Star ***** Review:

Grace Reeves does exactly as she's told by her father. He keeps her sheltered and finds the man for her to marry even though she won't ever love him. She believes all her father loves her for is publicity for his political campaign.

Reid Allister is in prison for life when he causes a fight in Devil's Rock so he can be sent to a hospital. He knows he isn't a good person and he never tries to hide that fact when he does meet Grace.

Grace decides she is done being the obedient daughter and wants to go out on a stroll by herself. When her "babysitter" is busy she sneaks out and is almost instantly kidnapped by thugs. They bring her back to where they live and guess who shows up shortly after? Yes --- Reid. They want to kill her, abuse her, and even rape her but Reid puts a stop to it. But he isn't sure how long he can keep them away from her. Her life could be ended at any moment if their boss gives the word.

Grace doesn't know how to react when she sees a huge obvious felon walk into her room. He looks mean and roughened by being in prison but he's also one of the hottest men she has ever laid eyes on. He awakens her sexual side that she never knew she had.

He promises to get her out of that house and away from the dangerous thugs. But what she doesn't realize is that he won't send her home either. He needs to have his revenge and if the first daughter shows up at home and is on the news then the man he wants to kill will know he set her free. So, he keeps her at his grandfather's old house and she tries everything to escape. But slowly, the two of them fall for each other... And would do anything to protect each other.

I originally thought the second book would be about North because he is Knox's brother and I was a little let down. You are kind of built up to hear North's story all throughout All Chained Up. But once I started reading I completely forgot and got wrapped up in Reid's plan and hotness.

Grace and Reid are so hot they burn like a fleeting star. Everything about them drew me in. Her innocence... His criminal record... Their intense relationship from the start. I had no complaints about anything. I devoured the entire book within one sitting. May I have a Reid for myself? Please? I also loved that she was a little "chubby" but Reid still wanted her. It shows girls and women that you don't need to be a stick figure to get a man's attraction or love.

I also loved both of their bravery. Both of them wanted to sacrifice their own well-being for the other. Grace makes a deal that compromises her happiness to make Reid happy and Reid does the same but neither of them knew.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves a great romance with some adventure in it. OR to anyone just loves romance because this book was hot hot hot!

Hard to Come By Review

Hard To Come By
Book #3 in the Hard Ink Series
Contemporary Romance
By Laura Kaye

Goodreads Summary:
Caught between desire and loyalty…

Derek DiMarzio would do anything for the members of his disgraced Special Forces team—sacrifice his body, help a former teammate with a covert operation to restore their honor, and even go behind enemy lines. He just never expected to want the beautiful woman he found there.

When a sexy stranger asks questions about her brother, Emilie Garza is torn between loyalty to the brother she once idolized and fear of the war-changed man he's become. Derek’s easy smile and quiet strength tempt Emilie to open up, igniting the desire between them and leading Derek to crave a woman he shouldn’t trust.

As the team’s investigation reveals how powerful their enemies are, Derek and Emilie must prove where their loyalties lie before hearts are broken and lives are lost. Because love is too hard to come by to let slip away…

Gabrielle's 4 Star Review:
Derek and Beckett start out by checking out Emilie's home and the ground around her. They needed to find her brother, Manny, because he was a big part of the team's investigation. But they didn't find anything so Derek had to initiate a conversation with the therapist inside a coffee shop while on break.
To no one's surprise, considering how smoking hot Derek is, Emilie is immediately attracted to him.
When Beckett and the team need more time, Derek seeks Emilie out and asks her on a date, that night. In most circumstances that would be EXTREMELY creepy but as I stated before, HE'S MEGA HOT, so she didn't really think much about it. She is hesitant though because her ex-husband cheated on her, so she tries to keep up a wall.
As time goes on, Derek tries to spend more and more time with her even though he knows she's a mission asset and he shouldn't get involved. It takes a while but he finally comes clean to his team and Beckett freaks out big time. (Which turns out to be funny in the next book because he falls for a girl mid-mission, too.)
While Emilie doesn't know about Derek's secrets she starts to worry about her brother more and more with his erratic behavior. Finally, she submits a report for him to be taken to the police or hospital so he could be evaluated... But she didn't know it would set off a chain of reaction causing a police officer to kidnap her, hoping it would bring Manny along... But instead, it brings Derek and his team and they do what is needed to get her out of the warehouse, alive and well. Or physically well, considering she was an emotional wreck.
Derek finally comes clean about why he initiated a relationship with her and it backfires on him. She hates secrets because her ex kept so many from her... But as time goes on, Emilie can't hold a grudge because no one was sure if they'd make it out of this mission alive.

I was looking forward to this book of the Hard Ink Series because Derek instantly became my favorite. Even though he lost his leg while in Afganistan, he still tried to keep everyone's moods up by always joking. He adjusted to having a fake leg and tried to prove to himself and his team that he was just as capable as they were. But this isn't my favorite installment in Hard Ink. It was a great read, and a wonderful addition to the series but I think I built Derek up so much in my head that I was let down.
Emilie is a great addition to the Hard Ink family. She's a therapist so she takes the job of team therapist without hesitation. Without her, some of the team probably would have fallen apart (although her duties is more in the next book). Even though her brother was killed, she was a trooper and kept moving, never faltering whenever someone needed her.
The steamy romance between the two was immediate and sparks flew everywhere. I felt their every emotion and it was an amazing ride to be on with them. When she found out he had a fake leg, she didn't look at him any different than before. Which, as sad as it is to admit, most people would think of him as less, but he wasn't. He's a solid teammate and he proves himself time and time again throughout the entire series.
Another well done job, Laura Kaye! I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good military romance, or anyone who just enjoys romance in general!
Hard Ink Series is wildly addicting. You've been warned! :)
